The interdisciplinary research group based at the Max von Pettenkofer Institute of the LMU and the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine of the Medical Center of the LMU in Muich focuses on understanding and elucidating bacterial pathogenicity and the effects of antimicrobial substances. The aim is to find better strategies to counter infections prophylactically and to develop improved methods for diagnostic tests as well as therapy.

The model organism used mainly are E. coli strains as well as Mycobacterial strains. We use model organisms as well as pathogenic patient isolates. In collaboration with national and international partners, parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum and worm species are also studied.

The workgroup is collaborating with analytical chemistry departments as well as with the German Centre for Infectious Disease Research (DZIF). We also perform laboratory studies and training missions in resource poor regions, especially in Ethiopia and Tanzania.
