PD Dr. Hanna-Mari Baldauf awarded the GfV’s Gertrude and Werner Henle Medal

PD Dr. Hanna-Mari Baldauf from the Max von Pettenkofer Institute was the first to be awarded the Gertrude and Werner Henle Medal for her multidimensional achievements in research and her voluntary work as co-founder and first speaker of the Young Virologists in German-speaking countries (https://g-f-v.org/jgfv/) at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Society of Virology (GfV) in Hamburg on March 5, 2025.
The Society for Virology (GfV) explains the background and significance of this newly introduced award: Gertrude and Werner Henle, who were born in Germany and emigrated to the USA in the 1930s to escape persecution by the Nazi regime, are among the most important virologists of the 20th century. In addition to their outstanding scientific achievements, they were intensively involved in promoting young virologists, especially from Germany. After the Second World War, they opened their renowned laboratory at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to young German scientists, making a significant contribution to international networking and the re-establishment of German virology. This commitment not only made them scientific mentors, but also important founders of new structures in the scientific community. With the GfV’s Gertrude and Werner Henle Medal, the Society would like to honour the Henles’ legacy and honour individuals who have promoted the further development of the field of virology through their exceptional commitment. This honour is particularly intended for people who have made outstanding contributions to virology and the Society of Virology, both scientifically and structurally, especially in the promotion of young scientists.
