PhD/Postdoc position „Physiological interactions of Salmonella and the intestinal microbiota“ (January 2016)

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student TV-L E13 (65%) or Postdoc TV-L E13 (100%) to join our research group Microbiota and Infections” at the Max-von-Pettenkofer Insititute, LMU Munich.

The DFG-funded position focuses on the molecular mechanisms of pathogen-microbiota interactions in the gut using gnotobiotic mouse models. Protection against bacterial pathogens is one of the most important symbiotic functions that the diverse intestinal microbiota confers to its host. Substrate use and partitioning among the different microbiota members and incoming pathogens is thus fundamental to microbial niche segregation in the intestinal ecosystem, but still insufficiently understood. The joint project with the University of Vienna aims to provide a detailed understanding of the physiological interactions between individual microbiota members and the foodborne pathogen Salmonella, and to identify protective microorganisms. Findings from this research will contribute to future therapies by defining microbial metabolic properties and physiological conditions that prevent colonization or promote clearance of the pathogen.

The PhD position requires a Masters degree in Life Sciences or related disciplines For applications as Postdoc, a PhD in molecular microbiology or microbial ecology is preferred. Experience with animal models is of advantage.
